Did you know you can be arrested for a DUI while driving an excavator?

Police in Habersham County, Georgia reported last week that they arrested a man who took an excavator for a joyride on county property while under the influence of alcohol. The North Georgia resident took the 30-ton piece of equipment along a public road. Authorities found the man in the vehicle on a private driveway. Thankfully, no one was harmed and only one mailbox was damaged in the incident.

This is just one of many unusual DUI stops we’ve reported about in Georgia over the years. Here are a few others.

A Lawnmower

Last year, police arrested a man in Oconee County for drinking and driving a lawnmower. They stopped the man after seeing him drive the mower on the side of the road while holding a can. When he saw the police, he threw the can, but they discovered more cans of beer on the mower. The man told police that he had only had one beer. He was arrested for a DUI Less Safe.

Golf Carts

In June of this year there were multiple arrests of people driving under the influence on multi-use paths in Peachtree City, Georgia. There were additional charges involved in some of these crimes, including theft and shooting people with pellet guns.

Motorized Shopping Cart

Yes, you can even get a DUI in Walmart. A man was arrested for a DUI in 2022 for driving a motorized shopping cart under the influence through a store in Evans, Georgia.

Just a reminder! You don’t have to be on a road. You don’t have to be in a public place. And you don’t even have to be actively driving to get a DUI in Georgia.
